A Look at Creating Space

Oftentimes, when it comes to relating with our kids, therapies will fill space with activities, requests, or other actions to try to promote interaction. Yet many kids on the autism spectrum have underdeveloped initiating skills. We help our kids playfully stretch their initiating muscles through Creating Space. This may involve modeling an activity without any pressure for our kids to interact, and waiting for them to come to us when they're ready. Or it may look like being silent and allowing our kids to speak, or allowing room for them to give their input. In either case, Creating Space inspires our kids to practice initiating interaction, and it takes the pressure off of them AND ourselves to make interaction happen. Less pressure and more growth!
